RULES
The Oakland Community Garden (hereafter referred to as “The OCG”) is being operated as a sustainable garden (i.e. no chemicals whatsoever). The rules of the garden apply to visitors, volunteers, and leasee(s) wishing to rent beds (hereafter referred to as “Gardeners”).
1. A bed shall be properly maintained within two weeks of confirmation your application has been approved. Beds will be kept planted, harvested, weeded, and mulched (including pathways around your plot) and free of dead plant material (other than compost). A neat, attractive, cared-for appearance in the garden area is required. Beds shall not be left fallow or unused and must be properly maintained throughout the rental period. All beds will remain free of weeds, pests, and diseases. The soil/compost material in the beds is the property of the Garden and may not be removed.
2. Water is supplied to each bed with a soaker hose. Each hose comes on for 10 minutes each morning, providing adequate water for the beds. If your plants have additional watering requirements, a garden hose or watering can is available for your use.
3. Be considerate of your neighbors. Do not plant sprawling or tall crops that might interfere with other beds. Plantings that extend beyond the assigned bed or interfere with other beds will be cut back to the proper boundaries by the Garden Management.
4. Any activity inconsistent with gardening shall not be allowed in the garden area and may result in loss of gardening privileges.
5. Harvest only from your assigned bed. Gardeners harvesting from other beds without permission will lose gardening privileges in addition to any other remedies available by law.
6. It is strictly prohibited to plant illegal, poisonous, prickly, or invasive plants. Garden Management will retain the right to decide whether a plant is appropriate.
7. Place all approved waste in designated compost areas only. Place all non-compost waste in appropriate waste containers.
8. If you will not be able to care for your bed for a period of time (vacation, emergency away, etc), please notify the Garden Management immediately. We will step in and assist in the care of your bed until you are able to return.
9. A $25 fee may be assessed if bed is not kept properly maintained throughout the rental period (full of weeds, rotted food, etc.)
10. If a bed becomes neglected for more than 5 consecutive days, every effort will be taken by the Garden Management to notify the Gardener. It is your responsibility to ensure your contact information is current. All determinations will be made by the Garden Management. If the neglect is not corrected within 5 days, the bed will be considered abandoned and taken back by The OCG. Any produce from the abandoned bed will be harvested for donation and the bed may be either cared for or tilled-in at the total discretion of the Garden Management.
11. All Gardeners commit to participate in 6 hours of community garden service per year to keep the common areas of The OCG maintained.
12. The Oakland Community Garden cannot guarantee protection against vandalism or theft. Any vandalism or theft should be reported to the Garden Management immediately.
13. Any items left in the garden are at Gardener’s own risk and will be deemed abandoned at the conclusion of the permit term if not removed by the Gardener.
These rules are subject to change at any time. The Garden Management reserves the right to enforce the rules and is the ultimate authority in any dispute. The Garden Management also reserves the right to revoke garden membership and access for failure to comply with The Oakland Community Garden rules.
